After so many enquires *clears throat* we at Gidan Nodza are delighted to announce a request for applications from the general public for the Gidan Nodza Pilot Bag-Making Training Programme.

The programme is scheduled to commence on the 5th day of March 2012 for a minimum duration of between six months to one year, for a tuition fee and open to interested parties who possess some experience in tailoring.

Candidates must also be prepared to be fully engaged and present for the duration of the programme at least 4 working days a week.

The January Bag

I just realised that I haven't posted these pictures yet, I made it since last year but I guess it got lost in my archives what with all the excitement of my getting hitched, the fusion show, new year and of course the Moments with Mo interview :D.
I wanted to try something which I had been itching to do, so I did and it worked out ~~as I~~ better than I expected and so it's back to the drawing board.

I would love to know what you think though.

Out With The Old...In With The New

Happy New Year y'all, better late that never ko. First of all, let me apologies for the sporadic post, what? am sounding like a broken record AGAIN? *blank stare* I don't know whatcha talking about *more blank stare* OK...*clears throat* so where were we? Yeah, I was wishing y'all a happy new year and let me add that may we all do better with meeting our targets for this year than we did last year, what? you met all your targets last year? *blank BLANK stare* just know that nobody likes a smart Alec! Hehehehehe just kidding; who cares if you didn't meet your targets last year? (and if you did, good for you) Who cares if by the first week of the new year you had forgotten what your targets were to begin with? Be thankful that you made it this far, just make new targets and move on...live life and be thankful for every opportunity you get to enjoy more of life...don't sweat it just love it :)

Let me just summarise all I've been up to since my last *serious* post, Fusion in Abuja was a blast!!! I don't know why it took me this long to participate- serious dulling I tell you :( I sold out and also got a couple of people eager to stock Gidan Nodza stuff, also I got me a brand new sewing machine, it does not have a German or Japanese engine but it will do for now (will post pictures soon) All my apprentice had bailed out on me but I got a new apprentice- just my spec *wink* and we seem to be getting along just fine, also the interview I did with Mo Abudu on Moments With Mo finally aired on M-Net.... and all I can say is that I am still replying mails and my waiting list keeps getting longer *wink* and the final icing on the cake :D, I got married... sorry I'm just breaking the news to you guys on blogville like that... but I am kinda private like that :)

So, what can I say? There have been a few hits and misses but all in all, Allah has been kind and merciful and for that I say Thank you and pray that this year is better not just for me and my family but for all of us, may I be writing a similar post this time next year...well maybe earlier than the 9th day of the new year lol! (and with different and better summaries of course) and may you all be reading it this time next year too, Amen!

First Ever GN Wallets

Of course these are not the first wallets I've made (see here) but they are the first made using our signature dyed fabrics uniquely crafted with leather. I made these wallets and they sold out almost immediately. I put it as the profile picture on my BB and on Facebook aaaaannnnnd lets just say the orders for these wallets are still coming in :D

The Green woven Bag

I have not even had time to name the bag yet!

I made this bag a few months ago and for some reason I kept it away feeling that the time was not right to show it yet... maybe just maybe (bear with me will ya) it was because I was waiting till I made more and varied designs or maybe it was because even though I knew that it was a fantastic piece and the whole weaving thingy combined with leather worked out as I had hoped it would I ~~knew~~ know deep down that I am yet to get it right. There, I said it!

So, why am I putting it up now when I am yet to IMHO perfect the "craft" and when I am yet to make more blablabla? Well, my partner mistakenly put it up (So he claimed) I think he did it on purpose if you ask me cos he was all excited and practically begging me to allow him put it up when I completed it and I vehemently refused and when he insisted I feigned the wounded artisan and shed some tears at the appropriate time and for the appropriate duration and he said FINE!!! He will NEVER mention the green woven bag again EVER!!! and I felt I had won and of course thought that was that on the matter. ALAS! I was wrong cos a few days ago I saw the pictures on the website and I reminded him of his "promise" (which didn't go down well mind you) and when he saw that I was ready to activate "wounded artisan" mode he quickly removed it and swore never to blablabla again.

But by then it was tooooo late cos a friend/customer called me asking about the bag that she saw albeit too briefly on the website and which was supposed to be "coming soon" anywhoos long and short she announced that wanted the bag and does not care what I think or how I feel about not getting it right, as far as she was concerned I can get it right on another piece but "The Green Woven Bag" had her name woven all over it. Needless to say I gave in (don't you dare judge me!)

So, that said enjoy more pictures after the jump and I would be happy to read your thoughts on the bag :D

Don't Be A Stranger...

Don't mind the title, it's a note and reminder to myself about blogvile lol.

Apologies for the sporadic post....I will try to do better I swear :D

Truth is I have started this post like several times and deleted it half way...I will tell my self "you haven't posted in a while, try and make it interesting yeah :|" So, after several "writing and deleting" I have decided what the HECK! Just write anyway or at the most let people know what you've been up to.

So, since my last post I've been sooo busy cutting and sewing like crazy, what am I saying? I AM STILL CUTTING AND SEWING LIKE CRAZY! Working for 12-15hrs a day, I am hoping to show my goods at some shows and stuff and I am no where near my target so.... more cutting and sewing then :) :( :( :) :|

Now remember when I put up a post looking for an apprentice? Well I got one like four months before I quit my job and got two like a month after I quit my job and MEHN I must admit that working with apprentice is no easy feat especially if they have no sewing skills whatsoever! And there I was thinking that they were going to make my job easier... for where, I was way behind schedule and for the most part got most of work done on weekends or public holidays when I was alone, ironic shey? But that was how it was, I am thankful for the experience though because it has opened my eyes to some things that I used to take for granted. So for a quickie on what I have learnt in this my brief "hunt for apprenticeship" journey.

I have learnt to be patient with my students especially when teaching (I am used to be VERY impatient) The fact that I can use the rotary cutter with my eyes closed and still make a straight cut (just kidding) or use my industrial sewing machine while standing on my head...serious :| (Just kidding again) does not mean that I should expect my students of barely 3 weeks to do the same (3 weeks is short right?) it comes easy to me cos I've had what? like YEEEEEEEEAAAAARS of practice so cut- them- some- slacks mehn. Shhhhheeeeeesh!!!
Since they came to you *thats me* to learn, let them watch and watch and watch and watch and watch you *that's me again* go through the process of bag making (beginning to end) and for those that care to- let them ask questions.
I learnt by throwing myself into what I wanted to do and perfecting my craft, and after SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS and years down the line but with more *clears throat* successes as the years rolled on :D, it is important that your students see what you do for a ~~while~~ WTH for more that a while, understand why you do them, get used to your routine, drive you crazy with questions, drive them crazy with the monotony of the whole ish and eventually, they get so used to it so that when it's *practice time* the step by step/process (if not the actual act of putting the bag together) ~~will~~ should be a breeze
Let them understand the importance of practice but let them practice on their own time and use their own stuff to practice cos people tend to use without care mind you tools that are not theirs, so you are left with blunt scissors, messy glue brushes, stained table surfaces, broken needles, misplaced clips, broken pencils and yeah...you get my drift
Get it to your *that's me again :)* thick head that you cannot force what's not there. Suggest a way to do something...never force it, you will sometimes hear me say " whatever works for you" or "what I would do is" or "you can also do it like this/that" but If you want to go the short cut route...knock yourself out, I will not loose sleep over it (not unless you are working on something that's mine) you will get your own rhythm in your own time...if you want :|
I am sure I have learnt much more than I've listed but I guess I am too tired to tax my brain right now but I think the most important thing I should look out for when getting an apprentice is basic sewing knowledge, an apprentice should have BASIC SEWING KNOWLEDGE, I should be able to tell you *that's you now* "thread the machine" or "change the thread" or "sew from this end to this end" or "measure so and so inches, cut and join it to this piece that is measured so and so..." without me popping a vein or or... you get my drift

*Yawn* I am so sleepy that this post is going to be published without me re-reading it *I believe my eyes are in a lazy eye mode* so pardon whatever typos or any gbagauns (as people like to say) you see ko ;D

A little about the piece, its made with SUEDE LEATHER and dyed fabric, it's a trial piece cos I never liked suede and again I wasn't sure how using it for patchwork was gonna turn out, and meeeehn I love it and I now admit to being a suede-leather-loving-convert :D

Another Lady Safiya handbag... what can I say? The bag seems to be the current favorite :D

Been meaning to incorporate beading to my work for a while now and the opportunity presented it self with the canvas that was used for this bag.

Just a plain black Lady Safiya bag was too boring for my peace of mind, of course the dark red leather gave it some "that's nice... red and black, not bad really" effect but the deep red coral beads added the "O-M-G!!! I want it right like right now !!!" factor

Bags Added To The Shop: Patchwork Cecilia & Lady Safiya

I have added two new bags to the slowly expanding shop. Below is a patchwork expandable tote bag but this time with Ostrich skin embossed leather, and of course below that is another Lady Safiya bag with snake skin embossed leather in almost the same shade as the tie-dyed fabric used for the bag itself.

Both bags snap shut with magnetic snaps, have 2 phone pouches each, zipped compartments, extra pouches as well as key ring holders so that you wont have to search blindly for your bunch of keys...been there *SMH* don't do that no more

More Lady Safiya in Brown

Happy new month folks, WOW! It's September already, time has gone so fast and here I was thinking that being my own boss I will not have those where-has-the-time-gone-moments *shakes head*

I have been so busy, my target was to take care of all my outstanding orders in the month of August (like it's even possible) and to start work on a new line of bags starting this month, unfortunately my assistant had to be away for two weeks (almost impromptu) arrrhhhhhh!!! I have to nip such kind of behavior in the bud and set some ground rules b/4 it becomes the norm.

Anyhow, I have been able to finish a couple of bags, Lady Safiya seems to be the current favorite and as you can see *grins proudly* I will post more detailed pictures of this Lady and other bags soon but in the meantime enjoy this Beyonce's Year of 4 documentary which never fails to inspire me.

I knooooow....it's 21mins+ long but well worth every minute. Have a great week ahead and thank you for stopping by.

On a side note:
I finally did it, I QUIT MY DAY JOB!!! When I started work my target was to give 2 yrs and then quit so as to face Gidan Nodza proper, well 4yrs + down the line I finally got the nerve and said f**k it! it's now or never.

Giving my notice was the easy part but waiting for the obligatory 30 days notice to expire was the hard part, at one point I wished it was 2 weeks instead of 1 months notice I was required to give cos I was sooooo eager to leave, at another point I wanted to withdraw the letter with apologies and assurance that I will never pull that kind of stunt again, next minute I had to fight the urge to tell my supervisors where to shove their assignments...well long and short, after a month of internal battle I finally deleted my mails, logged of the system, took my bag, said a few byes-I'll miss you-keep in touch blahblahblah and walked out a free woman, proud, scared, nervous, excited, apprehensive but eager to take the bull by the horn and charge head on :D

My first order of business is to ~~take care of~~ clear all outstanding orders (yes you-I am talking to you, your bag will get to you sooner than later, I promise) before settling down to take Gidan Nodza to the next level-LETS GO THERE!!!

Lady Safiya Handbag in Blue

OK, this is the 2nd piece of the 3 pieces I have been yakking on about. Hmmmm...one thing you should know about me is that I am not a girly-girly kind of girl, I never did cute bows and ball dresses as a little girl, I only wear earrings occassionaly, little or no make-up unless it's unavoidable, ~~pants~~ jeans over skirts (some most of my colleagues at work have never seen me in skirt for the 4yrs we've been working in the same building HA!) been rocking dreadlocks for 3yrs plus cos I got tired of the weekly trips to saloons and the constant worry over what to do with the hair. So, where did this blue bag with pink trimmings and pink bow over blue bow come from? Search me :-I

Lady Safiya Handbag in Brown

I promised I was going to post some pictures of bags I just completed, well this is the first of the 3 pieces.

This piece is a first for me because the fabric used is not the usual hand dyed canvas but hand dyed linen! I had been meaning to experiment with other fabrics and I must admit that I am quite satisfied with the outcome. The tie and dye came out well...if I may say so myself :-)

The owner of the bag wanted something roomy, striking, classy, well made, a conversation starter, her words were something like " I want a bag that will have people or my friends wondering where I got it from... something to make them go WOW!!!" etc etc. Well I am happy to report that she did not only take this brown piece, but all three that I sent to her to choose from (I will post the pictures of the remaining two later) I made 2 extras, just-in-case kinda extras ( I always try do that for custom orders) and she took'em all :-)

Chiaka Bag... Patchwork Version

People are STILL loving these patchwork bags...I was not kidding when I said I cannot make them fast enough (big cheeky grin) The orders I have on my waiting list include 2 patchwork bags and ANOTHER version of this same bag... whowouldathunkit? Keep'em coming I say (Hi5 y'all, lol)

Mushin Leather Market

I was in Mushin a few days back doing what I love doing best...you guessed it, buying leather! It was a wet day and it had to be a quick in and out for me, I was in the market like a few minutes past 8:00 am and out by 10:00 am (that is a record for me cos visiting this market is usually like a full day's event for me, I never get tired of this place, it seems I am always discovering new stuff... it's great I tell you)

As far as I know Mushin is the largest retail leather market in Lagos ( I stand to be corrected) where you can get both imported and locally produced leather and not to mention fake leather (though the sellers will swear that it is genuine) You can get just about any kind of leather here... that's if you are willing to get on your knees (errr not reeeeally or rather not always..but you get my drift) and dig through piles of musty leather for that greeeeeeat looking piece that you have been searching for all your life, just to be told that most of that greeeeeeat piece sold out a few days back - if not you will just have to settle for what is hung on nails and hooks, but trust me digging for leather is much more fun!!!

I get most of my metal/bronze accessories here too.

This is Joyce, I get most of my metals and other accessories from her. The pieces pinned on the board behind her are samples of what she ~~had~~ has available... just pray that the piece you want at a particular time is in stock cos a piece being on the board doesn't necessarily mean it's in stock (That's Mushin for you)

More of Joyce's shop, how she makes sense of all this stuff amazes me

See what I mean about making making sense?

Over time I have learnt that to get the best out of this market, you have to

~~Have an idea of~~ Know what you want
Have the time to search for what you want
Never shy away from asking questions and always take what the sellers tell you with a pinch of salt
When the sellers tell you it wont work, say thank you but buy it and try it out first
See accessories you like? TAKE EVERYTHING!!! or if you are short on cash at the time, put money down on everything but make sure you go back to collect ASAP, chances are you might ~~never~~ not get them again
Fight the urge not to always buy the first leather you see (easier said than done I tell you) cos chances you might find something better just when you have run out of cash.
Ignore sellers that shout and make noise to get your attention, those that have the good stuff wont call out, they will wait for you to find them after many hits and misses
Learn to talk from the corner of your mouth to other buyers to feel them out on what you are purchasing to get their view on genuineness and price- some might oblige you and some will try to be standoffish- forgive but forget them!
Wear flats or slippers, jeans/pants in short dress comfortably and be ready to climb, duck, jump, push back, dodge and where necessary elbow through buyers, sellers, hawkers, children, cars, bikes, goats, chickens... you name it hehehehe
Last but not least (I need to sleep...it's 1:57 am) learn to take in a lot from the corners of your eyes without alerting the sellers... window shop in style while still moving fast on your feet - dodging, ducking, jumping...you get my drift
Oh....and another last, when you see what you reeeeallly reeeealllly want... look bored, uninterested and almost angry even, act like it's not really what you are after but are going to make do with it anyway, don't act over excited or that way they will never reduce from the initial price (easier said than done I tell you, most times I get carried away and get cheated in the process, but I still end up a happy camper lol!!!)

On a final note (this is the last I promise) always take the time to be nice and courteous to the sellers, it cost nothing I swear and don't forget that just like you they are out to make a killing (so to speak) I have come to learn that you can make loyal customers too out of them, you will find that some that are willing to go out on a limb for you i.e holding down items for you without prior deposit, telling you what and who not to buy from, alerting you of new stock deliveries and such small favours... you know

Yep people! I am still here...No, I have not been abducted by handbag designer loving aliens or something like that and No!!! I have not gone into politics or something equally ridiculous hehehe. I have been busy making bags and more bags and I have some pictures to prove'em...oh yels I do.

But before we jump to the pic I need to update you lovely folks about whats been going on here at Gidan Nodza. Two major updates and I will use bullet points, please pardon me

Remember my post here about looking for an apprentice? Well I got one now and I am please to report that she is just what the doctor ordered. She has no prior experience but she is passionate about learning the art and most importantly willing to learn.
Also, remember this post about my workshop WALLS? They finally got painted, first time in over twenty years, I am still getting used to the new colour cos sometimes the sudden brightness of the place stops me in my tracks, no more dreary gloomy runny faded grey paint but bright-sunny-uplifting-cheering-spring in my steps light peach colour (sharp contrast-I know!)

So, enough bullet points, and since I am not one to make small talks I will sign out here (before we get to that awkward- silence-moment) to go edit some of them pictures for upload asap... see you folks in the next post.

Na who I go ask, the matter wey you see so...

I love this Cobhams and Omawumi collabo, who am I kidding, I love anything Omawumi and any collabo with Cobhams is an added bonus :) This current single is HOT!!! Not only is it only well written, well laid, WELL SUNG (yes, I said it...that sister has some voice on her) it talks about issues that we as Nigerians or maybe Africans generally...or safe to say most people world over like to act like it doesn't happen, child abuse... of the worst kind. Don't get me wrong, any form of child abuse is bad but where this form of abuse is sexual... not just that, it is perpetrated by a parent or a sibling or a first level relative is most appalling. In most or all cases when it happens the matter is hushed up and nobody is made to pay, except the victim of course. When the shit hits the fan, few mother's raise hell, siblings are just severely warned and closely monitored, relatives are sometimes told to move and a parent is left alone with his so called conscience, the victim is expected to get over it and continue business of life as usual with the assaulter(s) in plain view on a daily basis. So, like Omawumi said;

"speak out or take some action abeg no delay

No let matters worse pass as e dey..."

I am not only sharing the lyrics with you (thank you FAB blog) watch and enjoy video as well, produced by Clarence Peters the video’s cinematography is on point, I love the way Omawumi acts as the neighbourhood olofofo (gossip) who comes out and spills the beanz, of course I am also loving the big hair and short retro dresses...so her!!! ( I love the dress on the lyrics page, girl if you get to read this.... I want THAT DRESS...no kidding!)

On bags and such related matters... I'm on it, I still need more hands and more hours in a day though. But seriously I am still busy but will post bag updates soon, I promise :)

Lotta Love From Just Joxy

Hi folks! Long time yeah, I am so busy with day job and Gidan Nodza I hardly have time to do anything else, am I the only person that thinks 24 hrs are just not enough in a day anymore? cos before you blink, the day is over *sigh* ( I need more arms...more arms!!!) I am currently working on making 4 patchwork versions of Chiaka (Yep! I was not kidding when I said I can't make these patchwork bags fast enough) The bags are taking far far longer than I thought, I can swear that the main reason for that was because I wanted to use as many croc embossed leather pieces as I could lay my paws on....and of course I didn't get/couldn't get all the pieces I felt were sufficient in one day- hence the delay :(

Anywhoos I was able to steal some time away from my cutters, machines and mallet to grant an interview to this site that I stalk on a daily basis:) It was kinda refreshing cos from the questions I was sent it was obvious that the lady was not joking at all, I had to look my best to answer those questions I tell you. I was asked questions about stuff I had forgotten about, ideas I had and moreorless abandoned... KAI!

That said, I would sincerely like to thank JJ for the interview (even though it forced me to dig deep into the archives of Gidan Nodza) it was fun and I enjoyed being part of it !!!

Hope you all enjoyed Valentine, for me it was work, work, work- Not that I am complaing though. The bag above is another custom ordered piece but in this case the owner gave me a carte blanche on the design, she just said I should make her a bag that will wow people...a few weeks (well maybe more that a few weeks) a couple of challenges and three bags later I felt confident enough to deliver this particular piece. Did she like it?... SHE LOVED IT!! Phew, now I can get on with my life.

Patchwork Remi

As promised, this is the second of the 3 bags. I guess I was on a roll when I was making the bags cos I started out with two bags in mind and while I was joining the patches for the 2nd bag I realized that I still had more that enough for more, I already had some sketches for this one and all I did was to make some alterations to incorporate the patchwork style/process/concept and Viola! Patchwork Remi was born.

Notice that the surfaces of the front leather pieces are patterned and...

...the surfaces of the back leather pieces are plain/smooth.
Trust me this bag is not as flat as it looks, it is roomy cos it was pleated at the bottom corners to create more room, so fear not all ye roomy bag lovers... I got you covered.

Apologies for this blurrry picture. Bag has the usual 2 phone pouches, extra pouch, zipped compartment and the key ring holder.

Another Patch Work Aduke

I ~~made~~ completed 3 patchwork bags. I have to admit that these ones came out much better that the first attempt...naturally! One of the things I love about what I do is how easy it is to change design right in the middle of putting it together. Patterns (when I do make them...I usually don't) are just guides and not replicas. I guess for me it's because, being self taught I always psyche myself that by doing it differently I might find a way of doing it faster and better (I must admit that most times it's not the case, sometimes I end up with more pieces and more work but I must admit...better result)

An example to buttress my point of doing things differently bla bla bla is the new Patchwork Aduke. Compare this new version with this one *wink* get my drift? Even though the person I made this bag for said she wanted it exactly like the first version I am sure she will love this one more...I can bet my newly repaired leg on that! lol

Even the interior is certainly better, no no no don't say I am making too much mouth...really it is! She wanted the bag to have a center compartment added to the 2 phone pouches, extra pouch, zipped compartment and the key ring holder that normally comes with Gidan Nodza bags...and we complied. So, which version do you wonderful readers prefer? Be honest...and I promise I will not fill up your mail box with hate mails and threat if you prefer the older version ☺☺

So, where were we?

I've been back from the hospital for a while now, surgery was successful and my stitches are healing well and I am making perfect use of my leg now without the pain that I thought I was going to live with. Thanks to every body that posted comments on the blog and facebook...gosh! it felt good knowing that people from far flung places are praying and wishing you a quick recovery... Thank you guys I really appreciate it :-)

Good news- I have managed to finished some bags I was working on pre- surgery and I will post'em later today or tomorrow latest. I expect to be designing and sewing like crazy cos I have a pile of work to do, I have been taking it easy so as to let my leg heal properly but I think it can be business as usual from now on... I mean the bags wont sew themselves will they?

A new week starts tomorrow, so have a fabulous new week ahead folks. Gotta go sort through 165+ pictures just so that I can pick out 9 or 10 usable shots, sounds tedious yeah? Trust me I have gone through more pictures to get less shots lol! So what have you guys got planned for the new week?

Chi-Chi Tote

Happy New Year everybody. Hope you all entered into the New Year hale and hearty. I will be going under the knife ~~tomorrow~~ today actually to remove a K-nail inserted years ago following an auto accident. I've been told that it's going to be a short procedure but I might remain in the hospital under observation for at least 7 days. So, while I'm going through all that I leave you with the pictures of the bag I finished and delivered recently. The owner Chichi who is currently rocking it as we speak just wrote to tell me that she loved it! (thank you Chichi for putting me out of my misery lol!)

Naturally I enjoyed putting the bag together especially the part where the bag comes off exactly as the owner wanted it (after several mails going back and forth of course)

She saw these and wanted something similar but as it is our policy in Gidan Nodza no two bags are ever the same...not if we can help it that is. I wanted her version to bear her name so I altered it a tinsy weeny bit by reducing the size, adding top Zip, decorative rivets in front, our Logo patch and the now compulsory key ring holder. OK I think I should stop writing now cos I think I am beginning to bore you guys to death...could be nerves, I hate going under the knife and shit.

Back to business, I have to say here and now that me thinks I have made and completed the last batch of wrist straps and cuffs for this year except for custom orders that I am already committed to of course (I gotta get back to making bags!) These wrist straps which I call wrap around straps were added to the cuffs I posted in my previous post. See similar straps made last year here and here.
Enough said...enjoy the pictures (apologies in advance for the blurry pictures...that's what you get for working till very late and taking pictures at night with just two 100watts bulb for lighting cos you had to deliver very early next morning...working on getting professional I promise)

Made these recently and I must admit that the response has been overwhelming. The cuffs have practically sold out I am at my wits end trying to make more to meet demands. Cuffs are made from two layers of leather (each of different thickness) glued together, stitched and decorated with studs, grommets, buckles and snap buttons.

Cuffs can be worn by either male of female, though when I made them I had grouped them separately but while selling I realized that all can be worn by either sex depending on the individuals preference and (sometimes) wrist size.

So, if these cuffs are your cup of tea I am currently working on making more and will let you folks know where they will be made available for purchase, please check back in a while.

Oh and before I forget......Happy new month everybody, Xmas is around the corner. My God! how time has flown? Everything is moving soooo fast. I must admit I love this part of the year and though I am not a Christian I absolutely love the Xmas fever that gets everyone, all the decorations, costumes and even the good cheer that people seem to be in.

40 wallets and a wedding!

A friend asked that I make gifts to give away at his wedding and his request gave us a chance to try our hand as making wallets... I mean what could be more perfect as a "Thank You for being part of our wedding " gift like customized leather wallets with your name and your partners name boldly embossed on the face of the wallets and OUR NEW LOGO (yaaaay!!!) discreetly embossed inside the wallet as well. That way anytime the owner whips out the wallet to make payments and such he is reminded of "your" appreciation which reminds him of "your day" which further keeps "your day" fresh in his/her mind and that way every body is happy lol!!!

The owner specified that the wallets be pocket sized and to have just 2 compartments for cards and such, that way one is not bogged down with too many card slots (I mean who needs to move around with that many cards in your pocket huh?)

But seriously if you are readying to tie the knot, or you are a friend of some couple to be readying to tie the knot, or you are just plain looking for unique and customized souvenirs and/gift just give us the heads up and we will be happy to oblige.

A thousand apologies for the lack of post... I have been sooo busy what with having to divide my time and attention not to mention expertise in different places. A lot has happened and a lot more will happen, many bags have exchanged hands but unfortunately since I am still without a camera I have zilch pictures to show for most. The camera I have my eyes on are hmmm e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e and being my type I do not want to settle for anything less (don't mind me I'm sure when I get tired of borrowing cameras and the disappointments that come with it I will settle)

I promise I will resume regular posting soon...believe you me I have missed it!

Ahem! Still on the give aways, Gidan Nodza is planning a massive giveaway on the blog and facebook, we want to get rid of old stuff to make room for new designs... once we are able to settle on logistics i.e pick up points and stuff the giveaway will commence.

Gidan Nodza is also diversifying as well as making some changes, a new website and logo are being designed as I write (hope you like the new blog look by the way... wanted something with a lot less going on) Expect more bags and purses and wallets and straps and cuffs and belts. We are in discussion with possible stockist too... soooo if you beautiful people know of a place where Gidan Nodza products will fit right in, please give us a heads up and we will be on them like white on rice ( I have always wanted to type that)

Finished this piece and delivered it yesterday. Customer wanted 'Vive' written all over the fabric in different colours and she specifically asked for this shade of pink leather. Needless to say it was a joy making this bag...I guess it was the simple challenge of making a bag and getting it just as the customer wanted ... and for the customer to actually like the bag, PHEW!!! So, let me stop yacking away and let you enjoy the pictures.

I am currently test using this piece... and I am loving it. I wasnt sure how the reaction was going to be cos I was worried that most will find it very colourful but lets just say... so far so good, you folks might be seeing more of these but in different and/single colour theme.

I know for certain that I cannot replicate this bag even if I want to, not even with a gun to my head lol... so Gidan Nodza's policy of no 2 bags being the same ever is no joke

Bag is snug, just the right size, not too big not small, I have my cosmetic bag, 2 writing/scketching pads, a puzzle book, a pashmina, a small umbrella, that is apart from my wallet, card holder, 2 phones, lots of pencils and pens, sharpner and eraser and yes! a tube of hand creme

No more rummaging through bag looking for keys esp when you need to go real quick, just pull the strap and voila! you are in the loo in no time lol!

A zipped compartment, 2 phone pouches and another wider pouch for those other stuff you have to have with you that other people esp men cannot understand.

I remember making this bag but I cannot remember when I made it, one thing I know for certain is that I made it a looooong time ago, hmmmm maybe the time is ripe for a re-vamped version...me thinks (nods head while chewing pencil butt and looking at ceiling and thinking at the same time...while still nodding head)

A wise woman once advised her musician son ( I'm gonna paraphrase) She said "Son, when you sing a song, make sure it's a song you like because if it's not and the song becomes popular or a hit, you will be stuck singing it for the rest of your life" Fortunately for me "Claire" is one song I enjoy and will not mind singing different versions of it for a very long time (amongst other songs that is)

I must apologize for the not so sharp and very poor picture quality of some of the shots, my borrowed camera for some reason just refused to play ball, these pictures were the best of the lot...unfortunately.

Where it all happens...

For a while now people have been asking about where I make the bags and stuff and when I tell them that I have converted a garage to my workshop it makes them eager to see it, I tell them it's small....just enough to fit my sewing machines and waxing stove, the walls have shelves crudely fixed by a carpenter who I personally think has no business being one and yes! I never forget to tell them that the walls have not seen fresh paint in over 15 years... or more I think (don't say I didn't warn you) then say they want to come and learn and I tell them that my space is so small that a person standing in the center with both arms stretched and a 12" ruler in each hand will be able to touch both walls at the same time, well...just about...seriously! You see because it is a garage when it rains for over an hr in one stretch I always fear and pray against flood, not because I am being paranoid but because it has happened before, when I work late in the night into morning (which I often do) I am exposed to mosquitoes and other err elements and of course I cant use aerosol cos it is futile, there is no door but a gate that slams shut but because the gate is as old as the house (20yrs +) the metal parts are rusted, broken and allows natures tiny ~~pests~~ gifts to mankind to keep me company. So, that said I invite you into my world... enjoy!

The machine partly covered by the fan is my everyday machine, I love it! It's sturdy, I love that it has a much wider space to maneuver stuff when sewing, I love the rolling foot it has instead of the usual flat foot cos this makes sewing round or curvy pieces/parts easier. The machine far far away is the first industrial machine I ever got and which I now only use to sew piping to bags.

I know..the walls, I know.

I have had this machine (yes, the one that's in your face) for over 2 years now and I have not used it for one day. Why? Well it is a left handed machine and Yes! I am left handed but the world's conspiracy against left handed people has forced me to learn to use right handed sewing machines that using this particular one is a fresh challenge, but of course I will have to learn cos the guy that services my other machines swears that when I start using this one I will sell off the other ones...Riiiiiight... I wonder who has said that to me before about the other machines. Those funny looking objects/boxes on the wall are light meter, power switch box (for generator) switch box for the main house errrr and yes, the light bulbs that let's us know when there is light and since one bulb is lit it means that there is power...UP NEPA!

I wanted a large table that will help me maximize space i.e bottom part for storage, center for shelf, compartmentalized drawers then top table, so I got ANOTHER carpenter and he made this...it serves the purpose but not exactly what I designed, oh well...

A better look at the unused sewing machine, more crooked shelf, the garage gate, a long armed singer machine that I am sure is probably the first that ever left the manufacturing plant and which I also don't use now cos the stitches are so irregular and my "engineer" cant seem to fix, a regular sewing machine...that I sometimes use to sew the dust bags and other miscellaneous stuff and of course ...the walls *sigh*

It might sound like I am complaining but far from it, I love and enjoy what I do here and I certainly know that with time I will move to that "workshop" of my dreams, that workshop that has room for all I want/have and more, but till then this will have to do and for this Oh Allah I am grateful.

Not fully as we would want but it's ready for use. Yep!!! Our website is up and running, it still looks VERY basic for now, that's because I'm the one tushing it up a bit with my VERY limited knowledge of html(s) and stuff (to be honest the hosting site is VERY user friendly...for basic efizi that is) We are working on getting a pro to upgrade the look and feel of the site, I want the whole shazam...you know model(s)...moving pictures...music (maybe, may be not) and all that good stuff!
Right now I have a few bags listed but will put more soon... I am soooo excited I keep checking it like every 5 minutes lol.

It's 10.09pm and I am sitting in front of my system drinking tea and munching crackers and I felt I should share with you lovely blog folks a song and video that I am currently feeling and absolutely love (been clicking replay since I started listening to it like an hour ago) of course it's not because the writer and pianist is my friend's husband and also it's not because I get to see her at the end of the video when she picks him up all smiley smiley and a tad conscious of the camera... just kidding (I think) and of course not because one gets to feel the love...respect...and all that good stuff a man feels for his wifey which he expresses openly and whole heartedly for the whole world to see... certainly not I think it's mainly because...who am I kidding it's all the reasons and more...the song/video is simple yet says a lot...honest...soothing. Simply beautiful. Just watch and listen.

I have some clutches that didn't make it to the exhibition to give away but can't post pictures for now cos my camera's emmmmm insides burnt due to a power surge soooo will try to fix it (I've been told that it can be fixed) or will see if I can get someone to let go of their camera for a couple of hours/days so that I can post the pictures. Making Hermes bags

I love this video! I guess it's because I love Hermes as a brand (though it comes second to Bottega Veneta) and mainly because this is how big my dream for Gidan Nodza is. I look at their bags Bottega that is and I wish I had a hand in designing and making them, their collections always blows me away and the weaving technique... I know I am going to incorporate it in my canvas somehow, I just need to learn how it's done...properly of course! I always get motivated whenever I visit their site, I ~~think~~ know I will be the happiest girl on earth if I can take a tour round their factories (dyeing, weaving and sewing factories of course) to ask questions, hover around people that do the actual work, ask more questions, take lots and lots of notes, spend a generous amount of time in the cutting and sewing rooms...just generally be there for a while *sigh*

Oh well, as the saying goes 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step' ... I am still walking!

One Week After ...

Its exactly one week since the last exhibition and I can say that I have rested well I mean I have more than made up for the lack of sleep before the exhibition. By and by it went well, so many people attended the response was overwhelming and encouraging. Shout out to my family especially my mum, brother uncle and my aunt amongst others who helped out in so many ways like transporting the bags to and from the venue, setting up the venue, arranging stuff, even dressing the mannequins...I was told that it's not an easy thing to do.

We sold out lots of bags...some designs more than some and I got orders to remake some of the sold out designs. You can still buy or order by contacting us. We will put up the bags available for sale soon on our upcoming website. So, enjoy the video!
